HBO Documentary Films presents a behind-the-scenes look at the performance artist who for one piece, sat in a chair across from various strangers, making eye contact for seven hours a day for three months. Over 750 000 people participated in the piece, which was part of a 2010 retrospective at the MoMA. Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present is an exclusive look at a woman who has gone to the lengths of psychoactive drug use, starvation and self-flagellation to comment on societal beliefs and evolve spiritually and emotionally.
Those interviewed for the documentary include pillars of the art world, such as MoMA’s chief curator at large, Klaus Biesenbach, as well as the actor James Franco and illusionist David Blaine. It is Emmy award-winning producer Matthew Akers’ directorial debut.
